Hi,
I'm just starting to prepare for our Botany unit using Donna's ML manual. There are so many great sounding books in the resource section and I'm wondering which are most useful. I have a few (2 or 3) that I found on the library system that I waiting on and a few others (3) I found on Amazon that I'm also waiting on. Which books did you all find most and least helpful? Any other ideas on what worked and didn't work for you in this unit would also be helpful. Any ideas for including younger siblings would be good too.
I'm very excited about starting this but feeling overwhelmed by so many (seemingly) book choices!
Thanks-
Kim
ps..One book that I haven't bought/borrowed that looks very neat is the workbook. Has anyone used that?

Hi Kim,

Did you read my Botany post under 4th-8th grade yet? It mentions several resources and how I taught the first section in a coop format. Let me know ( or email me privately ) if you want more information on the resources.

Yes, Barbara, I did read (and reread) your wonderful post! Sounds like such a well put together main lesson and so much fun to do in a group. I hope I can do a quarter of that. LOL!
As far as actual book resources, I saw that you mentioned Donna's Botany book, which I have been reading and Keepers of Plants, which I just received late yesterday and have just glanced at so far. I may have missed some if there were others mentioned.
Thank you for all of your help!

Hi Kim,

The most important part of the botany block is to ground it in what is around you - ie what plants there are where you live. So I would say the most important book would be a local plant guide so you can see what's around you - and if it is one which has local plant lore and perhaps information about how Native people and early Europeans used the plants, so much the better!

I gave WAY more books than one needs - that was just to give an idea of possibilities.

Thanks, Donna!
I did find some local plant books in the library and we're planning on visiting some nature parks as well. I think what I need to do is just relax and have fun learning as we explore what's around us. I did see that resource list and feel that I must NEED a lot of books for this. LOL!
